Came Through Sippin’: National Tequila Day

written by Stevi Portz

Did you know there might be benefits of tequila, aside from enhanced table dancing? Yeah, we’re pretty stoked about it too. We’ve all had a night out where tequila caused some not-so-great decisions (we apologize for re-opening any closed wounds), but if you are going to indulge, 100% agave tequila in moderation might be your best bet!

At TruFusion, we’re all about balancing working hard and having fun, so this National Tequila Day, we’re reaching for the salt and lime and hoping these impressive health benefits are true! Read on for more about what we learned and at the end, you’ll find two healthy tequila libation recipes by TruFusion Cycle Instructor and healthy eats blogger Stevi Portz, AKA @stayfitstevi, you can make to celebrate!

Balance Digestion with Tequila

Nothing like a shot of tequila right before a big meal, right? Similar to an aperitif, tequila induces appetite and metabolism. If you’re more of a post-meal tequila drinker, tequila aids with digestion – we’ll be testing this theory on Taco Tuesday. Purely for health research, of course.

Tequila May Lower Cholesterol & Blood Sugar

While tequila increases your likelihood to sing karaoke, it may decrease cholesterol and blood sugar. A study from the American Chemical Society suggests that tequila has the ability to lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol, making it a potential healthier choice of alcohol.

Tequila May Act as a Probiotic

Because of the fructans in tequila, it contains probiotics similar to those found in yogurt and fermented foods like sauerkraut. An appropriate amount of probiotics balance the healthy bacteria in our intestines for improved overall health and immune function.

  • ½ C organic mango juice
  • Pinch of turmeric
  • 1 shot (2oz) 100% Silver Agave Tequila
  • ¼ – ½  lime, juiced (depending on desired tartness)
1 tsp orange liquor (Grand Marnier or Triple Sec)
  • Ice
  • Fresh mango for garnish
  • Optional: Jalapeno slices for spice, kosher salt for rim
  1. Mix mango juice, turmeric, lime juice, and 2-3 jalapeno slices in a cocktail mixer. Allow to sit for 15 minutes to absorb the spice!
  2. Once ready, add in orange liquor and tequila. Shake in the cocktail mixer.

  3. To salt the rim of your cup, take the leftover lime and glide it along the lip. Spread Kosher salt on a plate, place the lip of the cup upside down on the plate and cover with salt.

  4. Add ice to the cup, then pour over margarita mixture.

  5. Add additional garnish if you want!

  • 1 tsp orange liquor (Grand Marnier or Triple Sec)
